The timeline for this important project is based around the date fixed for the CMI AGM of 22 September 2015. In short, we will be seeking member approval to approach the Privy Council to make provision for the award of Chartered Management Consultant within the CMI Charter.
This project is being led by the volunteer and executive teams of CMI/IC and MCA – the Management Consultancies Association. The consensus from the various project teams is that the project is moving ahead well and is on schedule. However, we are now moving into a critical phase of development of the ChMC as a ‘product’.
A comprehensive consultation exercise had been undertaken, focusing on a definition for ChMC and insight into the competency framework. Those engaged were:
- IC members
- CMI members working in consultancy
- IC Practices
- MCA member Practices (SMEs, large firms)
- The Richmond Group
- Consultancy procurers.
An excellent response rate was achieved from the online survey and there is a groundswell of support for the project aims. Many thanks to all of you who did submit views. These have been assessed, together with feedback from a number of telephone interviews and workshops with SME practices, partners of the large firms, and Young MCA.
The questions posed and feedback received during the consultation covered the following aspects:
- the potential value of ChMC – as a differentiator
- the standards to be enshrined within it – professional; ethical; technical; personal
- the need for the award to be relevant; specific rather than generic; and to demonstrate transferability of skills
- This will form an important part of a whole ‘pathway for learning’ for management consultants
The full outcomes have now been considered by the Product Definition and Design Task Groups and have led to the development of a ‘strawman’ definition for ChMC. Once further refined, this will be the subject of a further round of consultation during May – so watch out for a further member communication on this via email.
We have had success in eliciting strong expressions of support, particularly from other chartered professional bodies. Support is also in place from key stakeholders including the large consultancy firms and the Worshipful Company of Management Consultants.
