CMI and OU partner to launch first MOOC to offer management qualification

A new programme of leadership and management MOOCs created by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) in partnership with The Open University Business School (OUBS) will be the first to offer learners a professional CMI management qualification. The first course launches this month on the FutureLearn platform.

CMI and OUBS have developed the Management and Leadership: Growing as a Manager MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) to address the growing appetite for online education by digital savvy managers. According to CMI’s 2015 Learning to Lead report, only 20% of managers say that digital learning they have undertaken has been accredited.

The two-part MOOC has been designed for new, aspiring or existing managers to develop professional skills. The courses are open to anyone regardless of previous qualifications or educational experience. Each course in the programme will take learners three hours of study per week, over four weeks. Managers will be able to update their skillset through a blended approach including social learning, self-directed study and peer learning.

On completing both parts of the MOOC, managers will be eligible to take a CMI Level 5 Award in Management and Leadership, which will help them work towards achieving professional Chartered Manager status.

CMI’s Director of HE Partnerships Ian Myson said:

“Only one in five managers that have studied online say that their course has been accredited. This new innovative partnership with the OU means that we’re able to deliver a CMI-accredited course to help thousands of managers develop recognised professional skills, using the latest tried and tested online learning techniques.”

Professor Rebecca Taylor, Executive Dean of The Open University Business School added:

“We have a long and proud history of offering innovative solutions to meet the needs of students and businesses, harnessing the latest technology to educate the leaders of tomorrow. Combining our academic expertise with the professional application of the CMI through FutureLearn means these courses offer huge reach and accessibility. Our understanding of how busy managers learn effectively at work ensures that these courses fit flexibly around work commitments and enable the learner to benefit immediately by applying the learning to their current practice.”

Simon Nelson, CEO of FutureLearn, added:

“We know that for managers to fit study into their lives, the way they study has to be flexible, meaningful, interactive and modular. Our MOOCS are designed to deliver the best social learning experiences for everyone, anywhere and on any device. Now, with the introduction of accreditation through our platform, we are providing a totally flexible way for managers to advance their careers and we are excited to be able to enable more learners to take part than ever before.”
