CMI comments on government's review of education funding for over-18's
- Apprenticeship Levy funding will help create work-ready graduates
The government's review of higher education funding puts the spotlight on the crippling levels of student debt, and it's a timely debate on who should pay. For too long the debate focused on only two options - either the public purse or the students footing the bill. However, with the new breed of degree apprenticeships, funded by a Levy on larger employers, a third way of the employer paying becomes a reality. Indeed, employers stand to benefit from getting the skills and work-ready graduates they're demanding. Similarly, students benefit too: they earn as they learn, and step into the world of work equipped with a degree, professional qualifications and the skills that employers want.
This week sees the very first five Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeships completing their courses from Coventry University with flying colours and ready-made jobs at GE Aviation. So there's a new debt-free, part-time route that needs to be celebrated far more, as this latest review looks at the long-term funding of higher education.
