CMI and McKinsey Research on Diversity in the Workplace

Petra Wilton, director of strategy for the Chartered Management Institute – the professional body for managers and leaders – said:

As the latest research from McKinsey shows, a fully diverse workforce can give businesses the edge they need to thrive. Yet, many companies suffer from too little female and BAME representation, especially at the highest levels.
While women hold the majority of the most junior managerial roles, (66 per cent) according to our latest research, they are still only hold 25 per cent of the top senior roles across the over 400 organisations we surveyed. Meanwhile, despite BAME representation in the wider population being at 12.5%, a startlingly low 6% of those reaching the top of organisations are from a BAME background.
Despite the fact that more than £150bn could be contributed to the UK economy with full gender and BAME representation, too many leaders have been silent on gender, race and ethnicity. It's time for change.
The first step is to render these pay discrepancies more obvious through reporting. As the gender pay gap reporting deadline approaches, let's make 2018 the year for diversity: for workers to call out, challenge and change the everyday behaviours at work that hold back progress.
