Graduate employability the winner at new HE awards

  • Anglia Ruskin University and Coventry University amongst first-time winners
  • Students from Anglia Ruskin University and Manchester Metropolitan University also claim awards
  • Universiti Utara Malaysia claims international award

Coventry University and Manchester Metropolitan University also picked up trophies for Outstanding Innovation and Delivery and Apprentice of the Year. Universiti Utara Malaysia picked up the international award.

The new annual awards programme has been created by CMI to recognise the higher education institutions that are making a difference to graduate employability through their partnership with CMI. Following the government’s introduction of the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) universities and business schools are now measured and ranked by student employability rates.

CMI partners with 120 higher education institutions to dual accredit courses to help learners gain professional management qualifications and accreditation. Nearly 30,000 students are currently studying for a CMI-backed qualification. This also includes international students in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.

As the domestic HE focus shifts to boosting student employability and UK productivity, CMI’s inaugural awards celebrate those that are making the most impact on the professional development of the next generation of managers and leaders. The categories were judged by a panel of senior business leaders in order to provide a strong employer perspective, and winners were named at the CMI's annual HE Conference held in London on 21 February.

Ian Myson, CMI's director of HE partnerships, says:

As higher education's focus grows on boosting student employability, our awards champion the universities and business schools that are transforming the learning experience for their students through partnering with CMI. I congratulate Anglia Ruskin University, Manchester Metropolitan Univeristy, Coventry Univeristy and Universiti Utara Malaysia for making great progress working with employers and with CMI to help their students gain world-class, work-ready skills.

The five awards categories and the winners are:

Category Winner's Name
HE Partner of the Year Anglia Ruskin University
Award for Outstanding Innovation and Delivery Coventry University
International Award Universiti Utara Malaysia
Student of the Year Jack Williamson, BA Hons Management and Leadership, Anglia Ruskin University and Barclays

The awards also recognise the best management apprenticeship talent. CMI worked with a group of employers and universities to develop the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA), which launched in November 2015. More than 30 universities now offer CMDA programmes. Manchester Metropolitan University CMDA Lucy Cheng was named Apprentice of the Year for her commitment to her apprenticeship at United Utilities.

Lucy said:

I am delighted to have received this award. The programme has already helped shape me into a strong leader and has also helped me to build key relationships with my colleagues and in my family life too.
