UCB's Business School Dean to head CMI's West Midlands Regional Board
The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has named the Dean of the Business School at University College Birmingham (UCB), Dilshad Sheikh, as the new Chair of its West Midlands Board.
The Dean of the Business School has been appointed for a two-year term, taking over from Services Business Executive for Rolls-Royce, Andrea Pisoni.
Speaking on her appointment, Dilshad set out her ambitions for supporting CMI:
“I am absolutely delighted to have been given the opportunity to Chair the West Midlands Regional Board. Given that I have grown up in the West Midlands region, lived here for over 40 years, studied here and now hold a strategic leadership position as Dean of a Business school located right at the heart of the region, I am very much looking forward to making a positive contribution with measurable impacts to the region.
“My core values of employer engagement, student engagement, professional qualifications development and my interests in the ever increasing need for a more diverse management and leadership team across all sectors, very much reflect the corporate values and strategic priorities of the CMI. It is a privilege to have been given the opportunity to Chair and lead the CMI Regional Board.”
CMI is the only chartered professional body for management and leadership, dedicated to improving managers’ skills and growing the number of qualified managers. The regional board delivers practical support to members in the West Midlands and by working with organisations like universities, colleges and other professional bodies to promote the value of professional management skills.
Dilshad recently became a Companion of the CMI, the highest level of CMI Membership, following a successful 15 years in the teaching sector where she went on to join an extremely limited pool of BME Deans nationally. Dilshad is often quoted as the only female Asian Dean of a Business School in the country.
Her academic career started with her appointment as a business & marketing lecturer, where she then went on to become the Associate Dean of the Business School at UCB and then later, Dean of the Business School. In addition to overseeing the strategic management of the Business School at UCB, Dilshad is also a member of the Professional Development Committee at UCB.
As well as being a Companion for CMI, Dilshad is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a mentor for the 30% Club.
CMI works in partnership with UCB, particularly focusing on enhancing students’ experience and their employability prospects. The Chartered Management Institute currently offers dual accredited CMI qualifications for over 400 students studying Level 5 for BA and FDA Business Enterprise, and for 50 students studying Level 7 for MSc Enterprise Management. From 2017 this will widen to higher level and degree apprenticeships.
Simon Bowen, CMI’s Director of Member Engagement, commented:
“Dilshad has a wealth of knowledge in the teaching industry and is a devoted advocate, both locally and nationally, of the benefits of a diverse leadership and management team. Her work to encourage more women, especially from minority ethnic backgrounds, attaining senior leadership roles makes her the perfect candidate for helping CMI in its goal to improve gender and ethnic balance in organisations to enhance productivity. I’m looking forward to working with Dilshad to not only promote the benefits of diverse management, but to help us engage with students.”
