UWE Bristol Professor to head CMI’s South West Regional Board

Professor Jane Harrington, deputy vice-chancellor and provost at the University of the West of England, has been named by the Chartered Management Institute as the new chair of its South West Regional Board. Professor Harrington has been appointed for a two-year term starting this month [October 2017].

Professor Harrington has worked in higher education for over 25 years. She served on UWE Bristol’s board of governors for over eight years and is currently chair of the Cabot Learning Federation. Prior to taking up the role of deputy vice-chancellor, she held the post of pro-vice chancellor and executive dean of Business and Law.

CMI is the only chartered professional body for managers and leaders and counts 157,000 in its membership, with almost 7,000 members in the South West. The regional board delivers practical support to its members and the wider management community, working with CMI’s higher education partners, employers and education providers, and hosting events in the region.

In recent years, Professor Harrington has worked with CMI on research projects, including 21st Century Leaders, which looks at ways to improve graduate employability. She was made a CMI Companion, a network of senior business leaders in 2014.

Professor Harrington said:

I’m delighted to be appointed as South West regional chair. I’ve been involved with CMI for a number of years and I’m delighted that the CMI’s key areas resonant with my own values. I’m absolutely committed to improving management and management education in the UK and I’m honoured to be part of the CMI committed to achieving this.

Simon Bowen, CMI’s director of member engagement, said:

Jane has a wealth of knowledge in the teaching industry and is an advocate of the benefits of professional management. I’m looking forward to working with her not only to promote the benefits of diverse management, but also to help us engage with members, students and future leaders.

About CMI

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) is the only chartered professional body for management and leaderships, dedicated to improving managers’ skills and growing the number of qualified managers.

Our professional management qualifications span GCSE to PhD equivalents, including the unique Chartered Manager award, which increases earning potential and improves workplace performance.

CMI has led the way in developing a suite of trailblazing management apprenticeships with a 40-strong group of employers. These start from Level 3 (team leader) and Level 5 (operations manager) through to Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship. A Master’s degree-level apprenticeship is in development, giving employers the option to upskill managers of all levels. CMI is a Skills Funding Agency-registered apprentice assessment organisation.

We provide employers and individual managers with access to the latest management thinking and with practical online support that helps them to embrace change, create high-performing teams and keep ahead of the curve.

With a member community of more than 140,000 managers and leaders, we promote high standards of ethical practice through our Professional Code of Conduct, and help managers to build their expertise through online networks, regional events and mentoring opportunities.
