Role and Business Priorities

don mckieDon is a Senior Operations Technician for Shell and is responsible for the operation of a gas production platform which involves both supervisory and management work.

While working towards the Chartered Manager award, Don was a staff committee representative with the priority of gaining a deeper understanding of the business. As part of this role, he was a coach for new technicians helping them to gain the necessary competencies for the job.

Business Impact Delivered

Don took a lead role in the training and mentoring of new start technicians offshore and by ensuring that they were able to carry out production operations effectively, he significantly improved gas flow rates, equating to a daily sales increase of up to £40,000.

In addition, working as part of a team, Don implemented a project which reduced unit operating costs by £2 million. His role included selling ideas to staff and acting as a buffer between senior management and staff. He was also involved in two substantial mergers where he was influential in creating changes and obtaining buy-in of staff.

The Appeal of Chartered Manager

Like many managers, Don wanted to effectively demonstrate his management skills and found Chartered Manager to be the ideal way to do this:

“The appeal of the Chartered Manager award was that it externally benchmarked my knowledge and the practical application of core management skills. This built nicely on my existing qualification of Postgraduate Diploma in Management as well as proved to my line management that I could achieve results.”

Ongoing Benefits

“The Chartered Manager award process has enabled me to focus on applying management theories and techniques to maximise my contribution to the organisation. It has raised my profile and allowed me the flexibility to put my knowledge and skills to good use. It has also set a good foundation for my continual professional development.”
