Role and Business Priorities
Joyce’s primary role within the nurseries is one of motivation and trouble shooting. She is responsible for problem solving in order to make other people’s jobs within the companies easier.
Her development priorities on a personal level are to improve upon the skills she has already gained and to increase the profitability levels within the business.
Business Impact Delivered
Joyce developed a Quality Manual linking procedures within the nursery with the Care Commission standards. As well as being used for auditing purposes, the Quality Manual is now a training tool and provides support for both new and experienced staff. Using the manual staff are now able to identify what level of competency they need to work towards. In addition, the manual demonstrates to potential clients the high level of quality care provided by the nurseries.
The quality manual has established a benchmark for good practice which Joyce now sells throughout Scotland to both private and council run nurseries. The manual made it to the finals of both the Nursery Management Today 2004 awards and the Tayside Business awards 2005. Joyce has since been appointed as External Verifier for the Scottish Qualifications Authority in Scotland.
The Appeal of Chartered Manager
Chartered Manager appealed to Joyce as she wanted to build on her academic qualifications, including the Executive Diploma in Management, and was looking for a new challenge. She particularly wanted to examine the way in which she was running the business and look for means of improvement.
She wanted to achieve something that would demonstrate her skills and commitment: “Chartered Manager is a benchmark of professionalism which is gaining more and more recognition all the time."
Ongoing Benefits
Joyce has found that the Chartered Manager process has benefited her in terms of her approach at work:
“The benefits to the organisation are many, from a personal perspective I am more confident and knowledgeable now than before. This has translated into me running the business more efficiently and effectively.”
“The staff have benefited from my experiences and are now carrying out their duties using some of the strategies I had learned whilst doing the course.”
