Role and Development Priorities
Following a technical and project management background Simon has been involved in management consultancy assignments since 2000 for a range of clients in over 20 countries. His work has covered a number of management aspects including business planning, organizational design, change management, marketing and performance improvements.
Simon has recently joined Risktec Solutions Limited at its UK Headquarters in Warrington in support of its specialist risk management consultancy expertise predominantly in the Oil and Gas and Nuclear industries. Professor Burtonshaw-Gunn says that he is delighted with this appointment which will still offer opportunities for international work as the company has offices in a number of locations including Kuala Lumpur, Houston and Dubai. In looking at his development needs he adds that as with any "new boy" it will take time to learn the prefered styles and methods of his new company and then looks forward to making a contribution to it business growth.
The Appeal of Institute Membership
Simon has successfully moved up through the Institute's membership levels as he has developed throughout his career: "I have used the Chartered Management Institute as a competency benchmark for my development commencing with Associate membership when I was part way through the post-graduate Diploma in Management Studies, through to full membership and onto becoming a Fellow in 2001 coinciding with the completion of my PhD and attaining the required level of management experience."
This achievement of membership grades has directly benefited Simon with career progression: "...my professional standing seen from my Institute memberships has also assisted my appointment as a visiting Professor at the University of Salford."
Ongoing Benefits
Membership of the Institute allows Simon to keep abreast of contemporary management issues. He has found the Institute magazines particularly useful whilst studying: "Due to their broad coverage I have used them in the past to support my formal studies as they not only provide a practitioner's view, but are often much more current than text book publications."
