Richard is a career Infantry soldier who has held command and staff appointments in some of the British Army’s most demanding roles in recent years. He has been responsible for leading change in such diverse areas as Northern Ireland, the Gulf and Afghanistan, in providing Defence support to Regional government across the North East of England while commanding 15 (NE) Brigade in York and - as NED of a Yorkshire based manufacturing company for the last 7 years – in a business facing the multiple challenges of a shrinking industry sector, a radical shift in management style and the economic recession.
He recently returned from Afghanistan where he led the NATO Training Mission responsible for programme managing the fielding of the Afghan National Army and the detailed assessment and planning for the transition from NATO to Afghan-led security in the country by the end of this year. He is about to embark on a second career as an independent consultant delivering organisational development solutions based on proven military methodology.
He is an MBA graduate from the Open University, a member of the Royal College of Defence Studies and an alumnus of the Defence Strategic Leadership Programme at Cranfield University.
Richard will be exploring the art of Leadership in Difficult Terrain – drawing on his experience of driving change in both the military and commercial arenas, sharing some of the tools of the trade used by the military change practitioner - but he will also be delighted to be led down any paths and burrows that his audience at the Business School might wish to explore.
