Your Network Committee, cordially invites you to attend the 'First annual update meeting' of the Cumbria Network of the Chartered Management Institute, as detailed above.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., with light refreshments available beforehand at 6.30 p.m.

As you're probably aware, there have been considerable changes to the national, regional and local organisations of the CMI.  Locally, branches have been abolished but geographical or business-related Networks are being set up instead.  The Cumbria Branch immediately re-formed as the Cumbria Network to cover, as before, the geographical area of the County.  Cumbria has an active Committee dedicated to serving its members and is working positively to ensure continuity of contact and provision of events.

Although there is no actual requirement for a CMI Network to hold an AGM, particularly as we are awaiting an operational structure for Networks, the Cumbria Network Committee believes that we should hold instead an Annual Update Meeting for all our Members to provide, and receive, feedback.  In view of the seismic changes that have taken place, we consider it essential to have the opportunity to brief you on the current position and get your input on the way forward for Cumbria.  Robert Newman has resigned as North West Regional Board (NWRB) Chairman and will not be at the meeting (as shown in the Programme).  Instead Roger McCartney and Chris Bennett will update us on past events, the present position and likely future.  (Roger and Chris are both Cumbria Network Committee Members on the NWRB.)

One of the changes is that Networks now have no direct control over their funding; everything has to be agreed at Regional level.  Because we already had a Programme and an agreed budget prior to the changes, last year’s organised events mostly went ahead.  However, we must now plan for the future and that is why we need your input.  Strictly speaking, the Network does not have a Constitution but we still need to run it.  We, therefore, wish to emphasise the need for your participation.  We no longer have a Treasurer, as the role is no longer required but we do still need other key roles to be filled, such as those of Chairman & Secretary.  Our current Chairman for the past 3 years, Lalik Nasmyth, is standing down at this meeting, having completed longer than the usual term of office.  We therefore look forward to hearing from you with suggestions and nominations for her replacement and for our other key roles.

Do, please, consider coming to this meeting, as we would welcome your presence.  If you do plan to attend, please advise me, preferably before 6th May, either on  01229 832 847 number or via
E-mail to:   so that I can organise adequate refreshments.  We look forward to the pleasure of meeting as many of you as possible.

One purpose of the meeting is to gain from you, the Members, feedback to enable us better to try and meet your needs.  We would particularly welcome suggestions for future events and are always keen to encourage new Members to join the Network Committee.  The Network currently has over 150 students, most of whom will be completing their courses soon.  What do You intend to do next – further training?  Why not get management experience helping to run the Cumbria Network?

As before, we organise events around the county but few of you ever attend.  Why not?  What are we doing wrong?.  Please come and tell us!

Yours sincerely,

Ian Palmer

Honorary Secretary, CMI (Cumbria Network)
