What do we mean when we say “like a girl”? Do we say it to be complementary, for example when we say to a boy 'you run like a girl!”? In many minds, these three words suggest someone who’s unskilled, soft and incompetent. However, a recent marketing campaign used the idea that 'like a girl' need not be a negative. It has created huge interest, with the twitter hashtag #LikeAGirl going viral. The result? Girls mean business!
There has been much interest in the press recently about gender pay differentials. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, had to issue an apology after saying that women should rely on 'karma' for the pay deals they want! A recent CMI report identified that being a woman costs 14 more years at work. In others words, you'll need to work until you are 80 to earn what the male managers in your office do. Does this make you want to gnash your teeth and come out fighting?
WiM (Women in Management) is our network in CMI that aims to address the specific issues affecting women managers today and to further develop your potential and life chances.
This WiM event is your opportunity to raise and discuss the issues that affect you as a woman manager today.
The discussion leader is Jacqui Hogan, chair of the CMI management trends network and a Thames Valley board member. Jacqui's experience includes many years managing teams of all sizes including managing the MentorSET mentoring programme designed to improve the career prospects of over 600 women engineers, technologists and scientists.
Our success depends upon your participation. So why not come along and share what it means to 'manage like a girl'!
This event is free of charge. Refreshments are available for purchase
