Those of you in the current generation of graduates will never see a career path up a ladder, with steps and titles and ever-increasing benefits. The flattening of organisations has eliminated the need for management by removing most of the hierarchy and encouraging intelligent, capable professionals to just get on with their jobs.
What organisations do need, however, is leadership, and that isn’t conferred by a step on the ladder. The leaders of your generation will be people with vision and the ability to innovate, people who are respected for their intelligence and potential, not their experience. These leaders will empower you to stretch yourself, urging you to reach for the stars because doing so is its own reward. What’s more, these leaders will be your peers, not your bosses. You will choose them, following them because you want to; when others follow you, it will be because they want to, not because someone told them to.
A technology-driven global marketplace requires agility and creativity, not structure and hierarchy. Making a nimble and competitive organisation out of a multi-generational workplace is a challenge that must be met through leadership, not management.
Rest in Peace, Management.
