Playdale Playgrounds is a family-owned business and is one of Cumbria’s success stories. Due to their innovative approach and dynamic management, they have weathered the recession and are growing strongly.
In 1735, the Croasdale family set up a forestry and timber products business and, in 1978, their descendants, Jack and John, established Playdale Playgrounds with 4 employees, specialising in fixed structures for children’s play areas. The company innovated and prospered, reaching 50 employees in 1992, 100 in 2000 and 140 in 2008. The recession in 2008 and its financial strictures meant that local authorities were strapped for cash and children's play areas were one of the first to suffer cutbacks. While competitors cut jobs and, in some cases, ceased trading, Playdale was determined to retain all its employees and decided to focus on export markets. Working with U.K.T.I., they now have thriving export markets in 24 countries and are working to reach 40 countries by 2018 – the Company’s 40th anniversary. The employee total is now over 140.
Come and hear how they have done it; it is a fascinating story and an object lesson for all managers!
Please arrive at Playdale’s offices for 7.00 p.m., where we shall meet M.D. John Croasdale and Marketing Manager, Rachel.
How To Get There
Follow the A590 between Greenodd and Newby Bridge and take the B5277 or B5278 (signed Haverthwaite and Cark). Drive through Haverthwaite Village (just a few houses) and at the end of the village, the road turns sharply left. After the last house on the right, there is a drive (on the right), followed immediately by a wide opening into Playdale’s premises. Please park near the Offices.
