This workshop is being run by the Institute of Consulting, Marvellous PR and supported by Plymouth University’s Faculty of Business.
This workshop starts with a chance to network with other business owners and managers, learn how to promote your business (without boasting) and then work on a problem or issue that your business is facing.

Promoting your business – the power of effective PR
Lucy Matthews from Marvellous PR will give you valuable insights for promoting your small business – without boasting. She will introduce you to the ‘dark art’ of PR and give you tips for telling your market how marvellous you are and what a perfect fit you are for them.
This workshop, run by John Baker and Steve Thomas (both Fellows of the Institute of Consulting) uses their highly successful and popular method of tackling a real problem your business in facing right now. The workshop will encourage you to:
- Critically reflect on the true nature of your ‘problem’ and the actions you have taken
- Draw conclusions from that reflection, and
- Apply that learning to create a plan for doing things differently.

Lucy Mathews – Marvellous PR
Lucy Matthews has been a PR consultant for over 33 years and has worked with a huge range of clients in B2B and B2C markets, around the world, from industrial floor cleaning manufacturers, to football clubs; property developers to therapists; Pepsi to pasta ready meals; photographers to authors; big businesses to entrepreneurs and small start-ups; helping them to build their profile through gaining free editorial.
In the last four years she has focused on helping small businesses and entrepreneurs to fully appreciate the power and importance of PR for their marketing, and through her company, Marvellous PR. She knows PR works, loves it and is passionate about helping EVERY business, large or small, to understand its subtlety and power and use the skills she has learned through her career to really influence other’s opinions of themselves and their businesses, to hugely positive effect.
Steve Thomas – GrassRoutes
Steve is the Managing Director of Grass Routes and has expertise in bringing about change in individuals and teams to create more effective organisations. He has worked for several charities before setting up his own for disadvantaged young people at the age of 28. His easy-going style has helped many organisations in a wide diversity of sectors to progress successfully. He designs and delivers learning and development interventions including executive coaching, team and leadership development, graduate development, soft skills workshops, team building events and a wide range of consultancy assignments.
Steve is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development, a Fellow of the Institute of Consulting, a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management, an Investors in People leadership advisor and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Like John, Steve is on the board of the Chartered Management Institute in the South West and has specific responsibility for the Institute of Consulting and CMI institute liaison. He also volunteers locally for several educational and environmental groups.
John Baker – Silver Moor Consulting
John has a broad range of strategic, business and analytical skills, and has a track record of delivering successful projects for clients. John runs his own consultancy practice in Somerset, specialising in helping clients understand and manage human error. John is a Fellow of both the Institute of Consulting (FIC) and the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs (FIOEE).
He is a mentor for the Open University Business School's Alumni Mentoring and is a member of the South West Board of the Chartered Management Institute, working with a team of management professionals to plan, organise and run a vibrant programme of events to help create better led and better managed organisations across the south west.
