During the evening Tarsem will be sharing his career journey, what he has done and how he got there.
Tarsem is an Executive Director of the UK’s leading frozen food specialist, Iceland Foods. He joined Iceland on leaving college in 1985, qualified as an accountant with the company and became Trading Finance Director of Iceland Foods plc in 1998. Tarsem left the business in 2001 but returned in 2005, following the takeover of the Big Food Group, as Finance Director and a member of the management shareholding team.
Over the next seven years Tarsem and his senior colleagues achieved one of the most remarkable turnarounds in UK corporate history, delivering seven consecutive years of strong like-for-like sales and profit growth that transformed a loss-making business in 2005 into one generating a record EBITDA of £230m by 2012. In the same year Tarsem played a leading role in successfully negotiating a £1.55bn management buyout of the Icelandic banks 77% shareholding in the company, which is now co-owned by its executive directors and the South African investment holding company Brait.
Iceland has over 860 stores in the UK, together with owned and franchised stores in several other countries, a worldwide export business and over 23,000 UK employees. It has twice been recognised as the Best Big Company to Work For in the UK, in 2012 and 2014.
As an Executive Director, Tarsem is responsible for Iceland’s Finance, Legal, IT, Stores Maintenance and Property functions.
Tarsem has other investments other than Iceland Foods, in restaurants, property, alcohol manufacturing, and a film production company and for no other reason than a free haircut, a hairdresser.
Outside business, his greatest interests are his wife, four children and Manchester United, not necessarily in that order.
