Aberdeen City & Shire Branch - "Team Goals"
Hi all!
As from the discussion in our Strategic Planning Meeting on Thursday, please see the goals that I have drafted up (after CMI website)
Team’s Vision (taken from CMI website)
The vision that inspires us is a world where we see:
First class management and leadership driving up personal and corporate performance, national productivity and social well-being
Aberdeenshire’s CMI Mission (taken from CMI website)
To promote the art and science of management
Encourage and support the lifelong development of managers
Raise the level of competence and qualification of management
Initiate, develop, evaluate and disseminate management thinking, tools, techniques and practices
Influence employers, policy makers and opinion formers on management issues
Aberdeen City & Shire Branch - Team Goals
To promote good management practice
Inspiring leadership
Supporting members in their career
Organise events for learning and professional development
At the meeting, there was a great idea for adding one for networking with members so if anyone has any ideas on how to word this, please post on the blog.
Please feel free to give feedback on these goals and also if you would like to add one or improve the wording of one. Once finalised and we all in agreement, we will place in our new Team Blog home page once created. I think I mentioned at the meeting of creating a short profile of ourselves and who is in Network Team. What do we think?
Look forward to hearing from you all! : )
Kindest regards,
Emma
Well done and many thanks again to Emma.
From my perspective this is just about 'there'. There are a couple of 'tweaks' I'd like to suggest and will post them up for consideration in next couple of days.
John
They seem fine Emma. Maybe the networking one could be: -
To faciliate networking amongst our members (?)
Thanks for all your hard work Emma. I will make contact with CPS in the next short while. Was speaking with my father who knows CPS quite well and he offered to make an initial contact on our behalf. So fingers crossed CPS will come across with a talk!
kind regards
Peter
Folks
The attached is essentially a briefer version of Emma's work. The vision and mission are the CMI's and I think a brief sentence alluding to this would suffice.
Our local approach at this stage is looking to build a basic foundation and we were of the view that beng too ambitious too quickly could be counterproductive.
We were also of the view that we would aim to be as simple and 'non-buearacratic' as possible
Consequently what is attached, based on Emma's submission is essentially a 'working strategy'. Essentially whatever we ( and others who may wish to get involved in organidsing) develop should be capable of being mapped against the working strategy. Having had further contact with Phil I think we should add a commitment around effective working with the National Branch Manager, Phillip Davey ?? (Thoughts). We may need to determine a single point of contact (SPOC) for Phillip ?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Draft Working Strategy:
The aim of the Aberdeen City and Shire Branch is to contribute locally to delivering the vision and mission of the CMI .
This will be achieved in a local context by
- Providing learning and development opportunities in the form of speaker/learning events that ;
Promote good management practice.
Inspire effective leadership.
Support members development
Facilitate networking.
- Ensuring effective dialogue and partnership working with the CMI National Branch Manager.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will e mail this link also to all members of the network to ensure circulation.
If we can get a consensus among us we may need to think of a form of words and a methodology to more widely advise the City/Shire membership of developments.
I don't know if Liam from a communications/marketing perspective would be able to pull something together ?
All foregoing intended to be helpful and not concerned if feedback is that majority of network members have different views.
Views ?
Thanks
John
Thanks John - brevity often wins the argument. Sometimes we simply get lost in words!
Thanks for the work, Emma (and John C). Looking very good. I am wondering ethics needs a mention. Given that many corporate failures and the credit crunch were, in many ways, due to managers behaving unethically. Ethics is, of course at the heart of leadership but ethical behaviour seems to me to be a key issue.
I agree with Peter K and John C, brevity at this stage of building the foundations is essential. Ethics, and other objectives on for example respect and diversity are already implicit in being a member of the institute. If they are not, then as s branch we should be developing papers for resolutions at our annual conference. But that's for later in my view. For now getting an increase in active membership through interesting and engaging activity will provide a foundation on which we can build. Thanks to Emma and John for progressing this.
Liam
This is excellent work! Congratulations to everyone who is working hard to make this a success!
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Hi Folks
In the absence of any further suggestions can I propose that the abbreviated version becomes our working strategy for the first year.
This could be discussed imediately post the September Walk and from there some discussion as to how we reach out beyond the network to the wider local membership.
Important to get the foundation established and build from there ?
None of us were keen at this stage to get into the formality of branch structures, office holders and bureacratic 'business plans'. However we will probably need a little more structure to support our energy in getting things going ? Do we need to identify and agree a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) with CMI Nationally ?
Simply my own thoughts and appreciate there may be more effective alternative views/approaches.
Regards
John
Hi John,
The draft working strategy is looking great. I am very happy and agree with the points. : )
Emma
Hi Team! : )
Do we want to have a short meeting (with the pub lunch!) after we have finished our walk on 25th. Just to confirm our Team Goals and have an agreement to put on our Home page of the blog. We can always amend and review as time goes on. What do we think?
A little idea I want to throw in for I am not sure if this could work. Do you want to have a little bit on the main Aberdeenshire home page about who we are, our photo and a little profile about yourself (employment, skills, school) and what we individually want to achieve through volunteering for CMI. It could be good for networking and possibly just a way to promote CMI team and hopefully membership and visits to the site for many members will have different experiences and jobs within the business world and could be interesting to see...
What do you think?...
I have recently joined Linked In today (thanks, Liam!) so I will have a look at that tonight!
Emma
Hi
We have done something similar for our Tayside BMT and I think it makes the branch look more friendly. If you want to see what it could look like feel free to laugh at our photo's
http://www.managers.org.uk/forum/tayside-branch/tayside-branch-management-team
We also have a facebook page now up and running and I will be setting up a page on Twitter and one on LinkedIn in next few days as well. I realise it is not your own branch but feel free to post comments on our forum or if we run any events you would like to attend just let us know. It would be great to promote collaboration between branches where possible.
(I'll stop butting in now ha ha)

Hi Emma,
A discussion after the walk at the pub sounds good. Can you remind me of where we decided to meet up please. I do recall Archibald Simpsons as the finish point.
Liam
Hi Liam,
It is the Mercat Cross, Castlegate we will be meeting there for 10.00am. The lunch will be around 12.00pm at Archibald Simpsons. I have looked at the route and it took 2 hours, 20 minutes with a few breaks.
I will see you there! : )
Kind regards,
Emma
Hi!
I have printed all the team goals from this forum for discussion at the meeting. We can finalised then and put them on the home page! : )
We can always amend them and update them as time goes on or it anyone would like to add one! : )
Kind regards,
Emma
