September Event - Aberdeen Walk - Welcome New Members
Submitted by Emma Grant ACMI on Sun, 18/07/2010 - 17:45
Hi!
Welcome members to Aberdeenshire and the City Network!
For the proposed event in September, I have been researching different walks. I have come back with a few local within Aberdeen.
- River Don, Beach and Old Aberdeen
- Ferryhill and the Bridge of Dee
- Aberdeen - Cults - River Dee Walk
- Footdee - Seaton Park - Old Aberdeen - Footdee
(All walks are on Walking Scotland website for the routes)
What do you think? Any one that you would be interested in or any suggestions for others?
I also currently researching for charities to fundraise for. Any ideas of local charities to support and raise money for, please post on the blog!
PS. Can you please avoid using attachments on the blog.
Emma
I would be prepared to take a group up a Munro if anyone is interested.
David Beare
Hi David,
That sounds like a brilliant idea! Where about did you have in mind?
Emma
What does everyone else think? Members, please reply to blog!
Hello Folks
As this initial blog develops the old saying that you can't please all of the people all of the time...etc..etc will undoubtedly ring true.
However, well done to Emma for getting things started and it's now up to the local network to contribute.
Let me take a slightly different tack from the first couple of entries. I very much respect that a lot of members may be interested in the social side and indeed the more relaxed 'activity ' approach can be a great way of generating ideas and developing networks.
For me a bit less interested in that side and more interested in how we develop some learning for members and pass on some of our own learning to others. For instance, the speaker at the last meeting had a lot of learning to pass on and was, in my opinion, pretty inspiring.
Therefore look forward to the next meeting ( at Aberdeen Journals ?..Date?)which I think those who were at the last meeting will hopefully confirm was to be something of a board blast about what the branch is for, how does it link to the 'mission' of the CMI and what do local members want to get from their membership. It may well be that some are content to have a passive membership and use the various learning products and virtual networks while some will wish to be more active.
OK, I've now given a bit of an alternative view and I look forward to others chipping in now that Emma has gone to the effort of sticking her head above the parapet and getting things rolling for us.
Cheers
John
Hi John,
Thanks for the reply! Yeah, it would be great to have some learning events. I am hoping to create a balance of the social events and learning events within the year plan.
I was hoping to have a focus on organisations and speakers within Aberdeenshire. I am currently researching the Union Square and considering ideas for that for it was a new development within the "credit crunch" and might be quite interesting to see how that was managed.
Do you any have ideas for events or speakers for next year?
Emma
Members; please feel free to put ideas on the blog
Hi David, Network!
I heard there is a really good hill walking somewhere around Kemnay/ Inverurie. Something ben..., I think. My work colleague told me but it's gone now. Do you remember what it is called or anyone....?
Emma
PS - CMI Library is really good! I just received a book to borrow that I requested for on Sunday. Very handy for they got a range of different subjects to look at and they are delivered by post. (There is no charge, except return postage of book and volunteer donation)
Hello Emma ( and others !)
Once we have got a bit of a draft programme say four learning events over a year I can probably source someone good to do a piece around Inspirational Leadership. Also happy to to do a piece myself around Emotional Intelligence at some point if that were of interest to members.
The key however, as I see you are emphasising, is engagement and the views of other network members.
Hopefully a few others will register on the site....it's incredibly easy...and we will get some more contributions. It's early days.
Once again well done for getting things started.
John
Emma,
Well a nice walk would be Ben Achie near Inverurie. 45 minutes from Aberdeen and offers nice views, not too high, and walks can be anything from a couple of hours to 6 hours or so.
By the way, the emails from this sight are gobblegook - looks like HTML language but not readable. It would be nice if that worked so I get notification of new messages.
David
Hi all, apologies for the email notifications. They are a bit up the spout at the moment. We are working on it though :) A walk sounds a great idea. Wouldn't mind joining you.
yes a walk to any of the Aberdeen City locations sounds a good idea.
Could we try Charles Skene - owner of the Skene Group who operate both Inchmarlo and Skene House Apartments. Charles is a visiting Professor of Entrepreneurship at Aberdeen Business School and is a fascinating speaker - although sometimes a little too political. I was fascinated to hear his lecture on how he turned his mother's flats into what are now one of the Skene House Apartments. Charles is also quite a canny speaker.
Hi to you all,
the offer to host a meeting / gathering at Aberdeen Journals is still on offer and may act as a catalyst for getting more early interaction from members that attended at the RUA Club.
Also, happy with a walk around Aberdeen, maybe more conjucive to a coffee afterwards and less of a problem if the weather is inclement. Bennachie is a fine walk up on a nice day, but not something I could do at present as I'm recovering from an injury.
Charles Skene sounds interesting for a talk, I also suggested Pihl, who have been building the 3R's project schools and are undertaking the new University Library. I know that they have a unique and cost effective build system that was new to the UK market and faced challenges in getting local contractors to work with them. Aird Buist has spoken at RGU in the past year or so, but could give an iinsight into the challenges you can face when entering foriegn markets.

Folks
I think we should grab the chance to meet at Aberdeen Journals sooner rather than later. Presents a great opportunity to further download ideas and also create chances for those who want to be active in co-ordinating/organising to support Emma's initiative and drive while also respecting those who wish a more passive involvement.
Would this be a September opportunity ?
John
Hi all!
I think it would be great to meet up at Aberdeen Journals. September would be fine with me.
Thanks to everyone who has put ideas on! : ) It's brilliant!
Emma
Hi All,
can I suggest the 7th, 8th, 14th or 15th in the evening and if anyone would be interested I would also be happy to give a tour of the business and show you the production process.
Liam
Hello Liam
7th Sep I am away. Any other dates should be ok.
Regards
John
Hello all,
Going for a walk is a great idea. I am interested to join. Just let me know when in September. Looking forward to receiving the confirmed date.
Best wishes,
Widya
I think the Aberdeen Journals is an opportunity not to be missed to meet and move things on.
At the moment, I can make it most dates except 3-10 September when I am on holiday, and the 15th and 21st when I have evening commitments.
Regards,
David
In order to get our network active and working I will make our meeting room available on the 12th August @ 7.00pm.
I will offer to do a guided tour lasting around 30 minutes that could follow an open discussion on how we take the branch forward suggest we set a challenge to organise at leat 4 events over the next 12 months. I'll provide a meeting room for up to 20 people, but I can only take 10 people on the tour at a time.
Details of the venue location and how to get here will be sent to you once you register your interest in attending by emailing me at l.smyth@ajl.co.uk
That time and date is good for me.
Looking forward to getting involved.
John
Hi Liam,
I would be keen to meet up on the 12th August. I have meeting in Inverness that day but will try to attend, dependant on time and traffic jam at Fochabers bypass! I will drop you an e-mail, as per your request.
I am more interested in establishing a network and identifying potential speakers. Living in Peterhead, I am less likely to travel to Aberdeen for a walk, but well done Emma for getting things going.
Regards Iain
The list so far for the Branch planning meeting on the 12th August at Aberdeen Journals includes myself, Philip Ash, John Cummings, David Beare, Emma Grant, and Ian Mitchell.
To join us please email your name to l.smyth@ajl.co.uk
Kind regards,

Hi Liam
I have emailed my confirmation to attend the 12th -looking forward to it. Kathy
Hi all!
At the Strategic Planning meeting, we can now confirmed the event on:
River Don, Beach and Old Aberdeen Walk
Date: Saturday 25th September 2010
Time: 10.00am start
Starting Point: Mercat Cross, Castlegate, Aberdeen
Pub Lunch afterwards: Archibald Simpson
I will send through full details of the event soon.
We hope to see you there.
Emma
Just to confirm that I am attending the walk on Saturday 25th September. : )
Emma
I'd have joined you all but I have my other volunteer hat on and will be manning the Guild of One Name Studies stall at the Montrose Family History Fair that day.
I'm Regional Rep for Scotland South (which for some reason includes Oban and Montrose ha ha) for the Guild and like to take an active part in these things.
I'll look out for the next one and hopefully will join you then...if you'll let me
:)
Hello Emma,
I am sorry I will be unable to participate in the walk. I am attending an event at RGU on the 25th.
Hope the sun shines!
Regards - Iain.
Hi Emma,
I won't be able to make it either. We have visitors arriving for the weekend at that time. Sorry - I hope it is a great success.
David
Hi Emma,
It may just be you and me! Lets hope others keep the day free and we can have a fine start to our network activities.
Liam
Hello Folks
While I cannot make the walk I can probably get a 'release note' to attend the lunch and discussion afterwards.
John
I should be able to go for the walk and perhaps the lunch, though I need to be elsewhere around 1pm! Didnt we agree that we would meet in the Castlegate at 10am for the walk and have lunch around 12noon at Archibald Simpsons - or is that just my memory playing tricks on me?
Hi Peter,
I think the pub lunch will be around 12.00pm. I looked and tested out the route one weekend and it took us 2 hours, 20 minutes to completed but we did have a bit too many breaks! We have about 20 minutes and some few short breaks along the route.
Kind regards,
Emma
I will see you folks at Archibald Simpsons. Enjoy the walk.
John
