The Business Value of Social Networking

I'll be speaking at this event on the 24th March at Surrey University, alongside fellow CMI blogger Jacqui Hogan.
We're planning on having a live blog of the event to create an archive of the event.
Are you attending the event? What would you like me to talk about?
I don't think I'll be able to attend live but would be interested in the live blog. I look forward to seeing how that whole thing works.
Hi MIke,
Like you I too am interested to see how the blog works!
When we were setting up this year's programme in the Bath Branch we also wanted to coverthis subject and so on the 18th March 2010 we have Profesor Mike Redwood talking, entitled "Social Media - Marvel or Monster?" Be interesting to learn how your event went and whether there were any clear themes that emerged?
Bob Hussey, Vice-Chair, Bath Branch
Hi Bob,
Sounds like it will be a good event. Did you want to put up a thread in the Bath Branch area promoting it?
I can easily set you guys up with a LiveBlog. Then you'd just need to login during the event and take updates, post any polls etc.
Let me know what you think,
Adi
Adi,
Is there an archive version of this blog?
Thanks
Abha
CMI Solent Chair
Abha,
The live blog application you see above will archive the event once it's happened so you can review it from this thread if you are not able to attend virtually during the event.
Adi
Yes please Adrian. Can you open 'threads' for all save the June and July events as shown on the website. You'll note that I have contributed to the Manufacturing discussion you had already openend on our pages.
Many thanks
Bob
Did you want to have a go Bob? In the Bath branch page you'll see a 'start new discussion' link. This will open up an interface where you can start a new discussion around the event (and any others you wish to discuss).
The branch areas are free for anyone to start discussions on topics of their choosing, be they local events, local news and so on. It should be a really good opportunity to engage with members on a local level, and hopefully attract new members into the Institute.
Have a go and see how you get on. I'll be here to help out should you need any (and I'll get the liveblog setup for you once the thread is up).
Adi
Anyone interested in this event might also want to experience Adrian's 'Social Media 101' blog. Try the link below.

Happy to take questions at the meeting if you post them here.

Thanks Adi - new thread now up! Bob
Good stuff Bob.
As Jacqui said, if anyone has any particular topics or questions they would like discussed, lets brainstorm them here.
Social Media – Marvel or Monster?
On Thursday 19th March 2010 Professor Mike Redwood gave a talk to the Bath branch entitled “Social Media – Marvel or Monster?”
Mike pointed out that it has been estimated that over 60% of children in the US spend over 44% of their time on social networking sites and that FACEBOOK usage costs the US economy $2.5 billion annually.
Even in China the traditional ‘collective’ family culture is breaking down and young people are becoming more individualistic because of the growth of social media sites. The average Briton spends more time on FACEBOOK that any other nationality save the Australians!
“The future is happening faster than you’d expected, and in the wrong order!”
Mike based his talk around five main themes. For the future “Markets are Conversations”. There will no longer be a need for marketing campaigns (he cited Pepsi Cola who have cancelled their TV advertisements) by marketers will have conversations with customers, potential customers, suppliers etc. This meant “Listening to Customers” who would tell you what they wanted and really “Engaging Consumers” in the business of product design and development. This meant he said that “Businesses (would be involved in) dialogue” both with each other and more widely, and that all businesses would have to engage in “Open conversations outside the silo”. He cited how easy it was to use forums to learn about customers and their potential wants.
Mike cited the major changes that we have seen to the travel, music, newspaper and photography industries as a result of digitalisation.
Feedback too was important. Customers trust what is said on Forums etc., much more than what is said by a company, and an occasional amusing FACEBOOK entry for example well might completely destroy a business.
Already most companies used LINKEDIN as their prime source for new recruits, and the whole digital revolution has enabled businesses to leave the traditional hierarchical management organisation, to de-layer and adopt a more flexible and responsive style using Wikis as the source of knowledge.
Mike finished by urging the meeting to adapt to and adopt this open style of working as the digital revolution is with us and will never go away.
A lively discussion period followed the meeting.
Further to my latest posting above I'd just like to add in two YOUTUBE addresses for interesting short videos on the subject. Don't know how to make these hotlinks but no doubt Adi can!
Well worth a view if you're a doubter!
How's that Bob? I use the first video a lot myself, it does drive home how big this whole thing is.
Good luck with your talk tomorrow, Adi..
Paul
Thanks Paul. Hope you'll be tuning in to the live blog? Don't go posting in any hard questions though :)
Sorry, Adi... but I'm actually attending a talk myself at around the same time. I think it would be rude if my head buried in my iPhone... :)
Paul
No probs. You'll be able to review things at a later date. It will all be archived within the live blog.
A great event and some very enthousiastic comments on the feedback forms. Lots of positive vibes in the room. No-one wanting to leave when the event finished - lots of lingering. And biscuits. A great night.
Glad you enjoyed the event John. If anyone that attended has any questions they'd like to follow up on they're more than welcome to do so here or in the Social Media 101 group.
