Challenge laid down to Island’s future business leaders
Applications now invited for 2012 Manx Executive Challenge
The Isle of Man Branch of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has announced that applications are now being invited for the 2012 Manx Executive Challenge. Anyone interested should go to www.mec.im and download an application form or email info@mec.im. The closing date for applications is 17th June 2011.
The Manx Executive Challenge is held every two years and is widely regarded as the premier development opportunity for the future leaders of the Isle of Man. It offers the opportunity to demonstrate senior management potential by working in a team to address an issue which is topical, relevant and of strategic importance to the Isle of Man. In November last year the Manx Executive Challenge was awarded an Isle of Man Newspapers Award for Excellence for People Management and Development.
Participants are drawn from a cross-section of the Island's private and public sector and formed into teams. Each team is allocated a project related to the economy or social infrastructure of the Isle of Man and has 8 months in which to research the issue and present solutions which are realistic and capable of implementation.
Teams are tasked with compiling a report summarising their findings and the competition culminates with the Final where the teams present their recommendations to a panel of judges and an audience which includes Government Ministers and business leaders.
Chair of CMI Isle of Man branch, Craig Allen, commented:"The Manx Executive Challenge represents a unique personal development opportunity and many past participants have felt that completing the Challenge has given them an advantage in their career. I would urge those people who feel that they have the potential to become a senior manager to apply. Similarly I would ask Isle of Man employers to encourage their senior managers of the future to look at what the Challenge can offer them."
That sounds interesting Andrew. So you get people from all different companies, sectors etc. working together on a particular problem? I presume you have different teams competing against each other?
Matt, that's all correct. The Manx Executive Challenge (MEC) is a popular challenge and has helped in the development of some of the Islands managers & directors of the future. The event has produced some really good success stories both individually and nationally. As we also link this in with the CMI qualification it is a good example of learning by doing with tangible results at the end of the process. Last year the Chair of the MEC was presented with an award for People Management & Development at the Isle of Man Business awards.
Sounds like a really good scheme. Is there anything similar on the mainland or is it just a Manx idea?
Matt, like most good things it's a Manx idea! The committee of the MEC have spoken to various people about assisting to set up a UK scheme at regional or even branch level but so far we've seen nothing taken up. I guess the incentive we have as a small nation is that we all have to pull together in order to develop and maintain a commercial or economic advantage no matter how small. It may be that this feeling of involvement or ability to make a difference may be lost in larger conurbations, hence why there hasn't been a take up?
Maybe it could be tied in with the Campus CMI thing that's going on, get the kids involved in management at an early age.
Matt, Junior Achievement is very active on the Island and more or less fulfills the role of what you suggest. Our JA teams very often achieve top 10 results in the European finals so from a school population of c6,000 we do very well.
Another successful year for applications to the MEC. Once again the popularity of this event leads to an oversubscription and so the difficult task of selection begins.
