Do you use apps for management learning?

We launched an app for the iPhone (and Android) today.  It'd be interesting to learn if any of you use work related apps on smart phones?  What do you get from them if you do?

It's a shame that apps from most sources (not just CMI) seem to be aimed at iPhones and Androids when, especially for management-orientated apps, BlackBerry apps might prove useful.

Is anything planned for BBs Adi?

Cheers

I'll confess to not really being up on smart phones (I don't personally own one) so this is a bit of a blindspot.  I'll enquire tomorrow though, see what the plans are.

Cheers Adi

While we're on the topic, one particularly frustrating element of the discussion email update provided is that only a very few words at the start of a discussion comment sentence are provided in the email - along with huge tranches of text about why I'm receiving the email, how to change my personal settings, how to stop watching and what to do if I've received the email in error!

Could you possibly ask your tech bods to investigate providing full text responses in the email updates to save me having to access the CMI webpage to read them - which is quite difficult on a BlackBerry! I'm quite happy for them to do away with the other repetitive stuff that accompanies each and every update. An ability to respond via email rather than via website access would be a good development too.

Thanks Adi!

Hi Peter,

I'm afraid we aren't currently planning a Blackberry version of our app but may well consider one for the future.  Our first app is designed to raise awareness of CMI whilst enabling us to learn more about how best to use these channels.

At the beginning of this project we ran a survey with a large selection of members that indicated that the iPhone was easily the most used smartphone.  We also looked at the market trend data that showed how fast Android was growing its share, particularly of the consumer market where we are keen to raise awareness of CMI amongst young non-members.

I agree that we would ideally have developed for Blackberry as well but we were looking to get maximum impact with a very tight budget, so apologies, but I hope you will understand our reasoning.

Thanks,

Kevin

I currently use IET to keep up to date with technology and 'Reflect' which is the IfL (Institute for Learning) app portal allowing members to enter their CPD details

Can't seem to find the CMI app for Android - has it be released yet?

The Android version will be available later his month - were just doing final testing now that the iPhone version has been launched.

I use my phone to check news and emails mainly.

Thanks for your response Kevin - and yes, I do understand your reasoning. I'll probably be upgrading my phone later in the year anyway and may go for something other than a raspberry next time.

I have downloaded and used this app. great start well done CMI !!!

Adi, Love the new CMI app - well worth the wait. Good design and some great content. I find it much easier to use the app version of almost all sites now with the iPhone - it's replaced my laptop for most general searching and reading. Other great apps with good management and leadership content are; HBR Today, LinkedIn - the groups, and The Economist.

Glad you're both enjoying it, thanks for the feedback :)

I agree with previous posts re the Blackberry, I use a BB and I keep in touch with colleagues and clients through it. I do follow the #CMI on Twitter. But as said earlier, Often you have load the full website for more content.

I also keep in touch with my students via email, text, etc. But again not all students have iPhones or Androids. Because I am also a web designer I created a website for them which formats itself depending on the platform accessing it.

I'm pleased to say that the Android version of our app is now available from the Android market

Erm! Can't seem to find this app in the Android Market (mobile). What search keys were used?

Also - which Android phones has the app been compiled for? I've found the app while browsing the market place through my PC but reports the app isn't compatible with my phone. I've a HTC Wildfire a pretty common phone with 2.2OS.

I use the CMI app for the iphone, and find it a very useful way to access the community.

I also use the "iReflect" app as a member of the IfL, which is an excellent way of updating CPD remotely.  It is possible to create a CPD record and partake in the necessary reflective practice at any time. It might be worth trying to introduce similar time-saving functionality to the CMI app as it would help members keep their CPD up to date, and may be of particular benefit to those who require management CPD as a part of their role in another profession.

good news, what about launching the application for windows phones?

Ok, own up, who here has accessed the CMI site whilst on the toilet?

Not yet Wayne, although I picked up an iPhone recently so have been getting to grips with the various things you can do on it.  Shall no doubt become more familiar with it in the coming weeks (not sure about using it whilst on the loo though)

I have been utilising the CMI website and app, both are very good, it may be worth considering bridging the gap between both medias through a dedicated IPAD application, as when researching this is my personal preferred option due to the accessibility.

An i-Pad app would be a great step forward. Having all the resources of ManagementDirect easily accessible whilst on the move or out visiting clients would be an invaluable tool.
