How do you add to your CPD?

There has been some talk recently about people not tending to learn from their boss, but also not turning to books for learning either.  Most would agree that professional development is key, so what activity do you perform most to add to your CPD?

I learn most through reflecting on experiences and networking with skilled practitioners.  I need multi-sensory experiences to engage more fully with and keep the lessons learned fresh in my mind

I tend to read > do > get feedback, and so on.  Not sure how you can add 'learning by doing' to CPD though?

I am currently 'researching' how people can capture their informal learning as an example of CPD. I have 'picked up' loads of new knowledge through forums like this, LinkedIn groups, Twitter and general websurfing. I am convinced this has certainly enhanced my professional ability and competence, however, it is hard to capture.

The CMI does have a great CPD tool and I have occasionally remembered to update it, and of course every time I access a resource through the information centre here it updates it for me!

I would really appreciate hearing how others capture and maybe even measure this type of learning. If you are comfortable with the idea I may also summarise the ideas you share into a mini article for sharing via CMI in some way?

Looking forward to hearing how you capture/record informal learning ...

I keep my CPD Log regularly updated and include attendance at conferences or disemmination seminars. I have decided this year, to also include a sub heading called: "new lessons learnt". The rationale is to identify new learning when engaged in client support activity.

I have noticed over the years that with many client intervantions, in addition to giving them my business & management services, I too learn from them. Not sure how to make this type of learning appear tangible, but I think a short reflective account might be a way forward; would be interested to hear from others if they have done this too and how.

Hi Margaret,

Good points.  We're exploring the possibility of having a toolbar that users can download and add to their browser, making it possible to add things to their CPD as they browse the web.

Adi

Great idea Adi,

I would LOVE something like that - I think it would be a real coup if you could set that up - perhaps getting people to register on here, if not become members to get that facility? Driving traffic to this site and members to CMI - surely that would get you a pay rise!

Watching out for it ...

Margaret

Just want to echo what Margaret said.

It would be SO useful. I am sure we all take part in learning activities for much of the day and it would be great to have read something online and just click a button so that my CPD portfolio was updated.

Nicola

each time i log on I spend ages trying to both find my cpd record as well as add to it! I do this for my boss on his professional facility with ease but it seems really difficult to find it on here.Is it possible to have a direct link entitled ' my cpd' and add cpd ?

http://www.managers.org.uk/cpd seems to work Paula :)

I've just tried to upload a scan of my CPD certificate and the completed rear portion of the cert but there doesn't seem to be an upload facility on the CMI CPD record - or am I missing something?

Fully understand that, for a CPD cert to be valid it requires the reflection element but surely I don't need to write that on the back on the cert and then repeat by typing into my online CPD record as well?

Would it not be easier to upload scanned certificates etc?

Kind regards

Peter

Hi Peter,

I'm afraid that at the moment we don't have the facility for you to upload scannd documents into your CPD record.  However, if you attend one of our centrally booked events then the details will automatically feed into your record.

Kevin

Thanks for your response. When you say 'at the moment' does this imply that it's an improvement being considered?

Peter,

We've got no immediate plans but I am collecting requirements for consideration when we next review the system (I'm afraid I can't be more exact as to when that might be yet)
