What have you done to learn today?

There are lots of different ways of developing yourself, so I thought it might be nice to share some of the ways we each improve ourselves each day.
Today I've been reading The Rational Optimist, by Matt Ridley. Not strictly speaking management related but it does underpin a nice way of thinking about life and the world.
Over to you guys. Lets keep this updated every day with what you're all doing.
I've read some things on here. Does that count?
I've got my Chartered Manager Panel today at Savoy Court - (cue nervous pacing and twiddling of hair.... well, if I had hair that is) so I've just been re-visiting my Business Impact and CPD submissions - one of the things that I've found most helpful in the C Mgr process has been the enforced 'stock-taking' of the submissions - it really makes you evaluate your role and the things we all do - consciously or subliminally - that help us to learn. I find that, the older I get, the more I'm learning. Today I have 2 articles and a magazine to read on the train - so that will be another hour or so of CPD.... My usual learning approach is to use the on-line leadership academy created by Management Learning & Coaching and The Working Manager - which I find invaluable. Thousands of think-pieces arranged neatly into topic pathways and with some - very tough - on-line quizzes. Keeps me on my toes and I use it most days over coffee or at lunchtime. 15 minutes can be very powerful if you spend the rest of the day reflecting subconsciously...
How did it go Nigel?
Very enjoyable thanks. Nothing like a good bit of verbal jousting to get the juices flowing! Only downside was my complete lack of a sense of direction - that left me circling The Strand for what seemed like hours.... it's a very long street... but at least now I am intimately acquanted with pretty much every square foot of it - which is handy, because I'm there again tomorrow for the Subject Matter Experts (maybe that should be in inverted commas!) meeting - I've set myself the target of finding it in less than a week....
Good stuff. You'll have to pop down to the 3rd floor and say hi today (providing you locate us successfully - I'm on holiday from Friday so don't take too long)
Well this afternoon I will be doing an investigation, result of which will mean I will know more about an area of the organisation I didn't already know about which will be really useful going forward. I will also learn more about the people I will be talking to, which given I am currently studying Psychology, will be fascinating.
On a lighter note I will be digging out the instructions at home to learn how to clean the extractor fans in the bathroom and the kitchen. I will also be studying as part of my working towards the Psychology degree with Open Uni.
A day jam packed full of learning...love days like this.
I'm doing an investigation this afternoon, too. I'll be investigating whether my telly at home is working, and 'learning' whether England have what it takes to stay in the World Cup... ;-)
Paul
lol Paul. I'll have the radio on listening...if I can find a decent station.
I've watched a few videos on TED. It's rare that I don't learn something whenever I visit that site.
I went to the college... :)
When I woke up at 5 in the morning I decided not to go for my regular walk ( as it was drizzlling too) and that gave me the chance to sit and read and the book that I am currently on is "What Got you here wont get you there" by Marshall Goldsmith
Just realised how much value you can add to yourself if you dedicate a fixed time each day to read and learn something new.....
Received a copy of Open Leadership yesterday from Wiley so have been reading that on the way into work.
Today I learnt what csv is ..... tomorrow I shall be learning more about social sciences (as part of my Uni course)
Today I've mainly been researching ways that our research reports can be promoted to a wider audience.
Also reading The Price of Altruism and just received The Truth About Talent so will read that when I get a jiffy.
Yesterday I learnt about Migration from a social sciences perspective for my degree.
Tonight I shall start learning about 'Making National Identities'.......can wait for the chapter on 'Pirates' :)
I am in the pocess of reviewing my learning and devlopment programme. This includes applying for chartered status. I also initiated (with HR) a programme of internal presentations to keep colleagues up to date with what is going on in our organisation.
Last night I attended the tutorial for one of my courses, discussing Migration and national identity.
As an assessor for Chartered Manager I learn every time I read a new assessment/submission for Chartered Management status. This is the best experience ever. Some of the submissions and the business impact are so good I simply can't put them down. The shear talant we have in our Chartered Managers is unmeasurable. The backgrounds to the individuals and their specfic role/job and impact unfortunately remain between us, but the impact of what they deliver and the means to deliver remain with me in my mind. I just completed my first professional discussion which was better again because I had a live person who wanted to talk about his success. It was a bit like seeing a book becoming a film. Am planning my next PD and early indications are this is a best seller.
Interesting to note Tom's comment here, as things we hear from colleagues and co workers too provide learning opportunities very often.
If he could share the important points in these submissions without revealing the names of the individuals and their companies - through the Professional Manager - it would make interesting reading
Agree, this is worth going to print. It will however require some discussion with CMI, and the individuals concerned to ensure we get the right message and learning across without creating issues for the individual or his business.
This morning I've been reading a study into performance related pay.
I attended a brand workshop, conducted an internal champions session and have just started reading Super Corp by Rosabeth Moss Kanter.
Today I've been reading about the positives and negatives of ranking staff on their performances at work.
Today I received some books I had requested from CMI library so I wshall be reading those this week.
I have also been asking people for feedback on some projects...with interesting results.
Last night I was learning about governing order as part of my degree.
The library is a fantastic resource. I've got four books out from there at the moment. If you're a book worm then it's invaluable.
I've got two, the other two I wanted are already out just now.
I only fathomed out how to work the library site the other day - another point of learning :)
The e-journal feature is really good as well. You get access to all the latest academic research into management for free (well, the price of membership). Can't really grumble at that.
You mean I have to learn something else as well? lol, ony just learnt how to find books in the library lol.....
I'll finish the books first
Hi there, I've been learning a new song that the vocal harmony group to which I belong are singing at a charity concert on Sunday. I've also learned that too much lemon in lettuce soup is not a good idea and that BIG Lottery staff are really nice people
I covered for one of my team while they were on holiday. This was great way to learn the operational details of what they do on a day to day basis and also taught me some new skills. A bit like "going back to the floor"!
I also read the first three chapters of Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.
Haven't updated in a while. Recently I've been studying in preperation for my GMAT exam, plus I've read SuperCorp, Hidden Champions and Wired for Thought.
Two Hansard reports. Interesting stuff
I often wonder if the new stuff I learn push other old important stuff out of my brain..
When I do try to learn, I often find that verbalising it, helps it to stick in my head, otherwise it just disappears with the other 'stuff'; so finding a receptive individual to discuss what has been learnt is important to me.
Currently reading a Belbin Guide to succeeding at Work.
Well yesterday I had a conversation with our Senior Puppy Walking Supervisor and learnt more about becoming a Puppy Walker (home assessment on monday so fingers crossed it goes well)
Tonight I will start reading Michael Armstrong's How to Become an Even Better Manager
Oh and I have a chapter on Pirates to read for my Psychology degree :)
You might be interested to know that CMI have just published a video of how to access all their online learning resources. It's worth investing 3 minutes of your time as there's a whole range of assets available to all members at a click of a mouse.
Lesson of the week for me is that we are all falible regardless of how hard we strive to maintain our standards. Self-management can be the hardest element of our role.
Lesson for me today.
I've been watching a programme on the iPlayer about the benefits of silence for contemplative reflection. I took a break from work today and thought I would try spending 30 mins in total silence and just reflect on what was "ping ponging" around my head. I chose to sit in my car as this was likely to be the only uninteruppted place.
Lesson learnt for the day; Don't try silence when sleep deprived due to a new baby and half way through a 12hr day... you fall asleep! I hasten to add it was a brief doze and I was back at my desk at the appropriate time.
Some may call it a power nap?
Final mock exam today for my GMAT so did that and then spent a bit of time analysing the results to swot up on my weak points over the next 10 days.
Going to a lecture tonight at Kings on how the Internet is changing the way we think and learn (and purchased The Shallows by Nicholas Carr for a bit of bed time reading)
I am currently reviewing some papers on Quality by Design and the implementation of the technique for one of my projects.
Final mock exam today for my GMAT so did that and then spent a bit of time analysing the results to swot up on my weak points over the next 10 days.
Have you done it yet, how did you feel the GMAT went?
Hi Matt, yes I sat it yesterday afternoon. It went ok. I think the biggest challenge is the time. 4 hours is a long time to keep your brain sharp, but you're also pushed to get a lot done in that 4 hours so you can't hang about.
I have been swotting up on the Highway Code for my Theory Test!
When's your test Nicola?
it's in a few weeks... not feeling very optimistic at the moment so will have to keep practising!
Sure you'll be fine. Have you done any mock exams?
I have a dvd to practise on every night. Its not so much the questions as the hazard perception thats difficult!
Just started Unit 7009 of the CMI Strategic Management and Leadership and so far so good!
Sounds good Chris. What kind of topics are you learning about?
