Women should wear skirt suits if they want to get ahead

The trouser suit may be the uniform of choice for the power-dressing career woman.
But she’d be better off in a skirt, if the latest research is to be believed.
Skirts give a better first impression and are more likely to lead to success in the workplace, they found.
Hmm, interesting.
It's great to see women dressing like women, but really, should appearances matter? You'd like to think we'd be beyond all that.
Have people got nothing better to do than research what professional women wear to give them the best first impression with a view to greater success in the workplace? Surely, as long as women dress smartly and appropriately for the field in which they operate, then why should it really make such a difference whether its a skirt or trousers? For me its either or! I like the colour black, which is smart, slimming and can be teamed up with any colour - red is memorable! Turquoise is cool. Orange warm. Maybe the research should have focused on colour instead?
If I was going to do research, then I would have focused on what men are wearing - I like shoes to be polished, suits to look sharp and, oh yes, they must smell fresh and clean........... Hmm, interesting
Quite right Viv, it's pretty vacuous isn't it?
You are right Vivienne and I doubt women in skirts achieve higher management positions than women in trousers. Perhaps men with dark suits and shiny shoes are more likely to reach board positions??
Oh that reminds me I have red socks on today which might be a real deal breaker.......
Don't worry Vincent, as the saying goes
How true, but sad, this fact is. It really should be a question of best person for the job. However, plumage plays a big part in nature and business - 1st impressions etc.
Pat Henshaw discusses this further at The Oxfordshire CMI Showcase Event on the 26th of October.
