Liverpool council to cut 50 senior managers in cost-cutting cull

UP TO 50 senior management posts at Liverpool council have been scrapped in a bid to streamline its “top-heavy, bloated bureaucracy.”
The number of departments will also be slashed by 65%, from 74 to just 27, in order to run a “leaner, meaner” organisation facing massive funding cuts. The council claimed the move will “substantially reduce costs”.

A good move do you think?
It begs the question why this wasn't done earlier. I mean if they can cut the jobs now without impacting upon service levels then why not before?
How many managers does Liverpool council have to begin with? If removing 50 represents a large proportion of the total then that would clearly be different to if it was a small percentage.
It works out at nearly half Wayne as they had 91 senior managers prior to this move.
Not saying that these jobs aren't worth 'cutting' but why is there never any uproar when managers lose their jobs? You can imagine if they sacked half of the teachers or nurses that there would be pandemonium, yet sacking half of the managers is seen as ok.
Are managers really so useless or do we need a major PR improvement as a profession?
