Leadership in different cultures
Hi All,
I've just finished a study into whether leadership styles could be adapted to suit the cultures in which they operate. Sounds like common sense I know, but several questions are raised:
Can organisations' cultures be adequately classified? Can they even be measured?
Can leadership styles be adequately classified?
Are there corresponding classifications of each such that a suitable style can be adopted for a particular cultural environment?
Long story short I tried it - after trawling through a mountain of research my results surprised me in how feasible and effective this seemed and I'm considering taking this idea further.
Would greatly appreciate some thoughts / opinions!
If you'd like to look at the whole project it's written up here:

Many thanks in-advance!
Hi Alex,
I'm very glad to hear the outcome of your research - my company, Cloud Management Systems, is developing a global standard for excellence in leadership and management amongst other things, so your research findings bode well!
Would love to discuss and explore further if you're interested. Full contact details / options are on the Cloud website (so as to avoid 'promotion' on the forum).
Cheers, Colin
Alex,
Like Colin I'm interested too in the outcome of research in leadership styles.
What I would say in my experience is that successful companies don't have leaders who are necessarily similar in style. But that's another story.....
The more experience I get, the more convinced I become that situational leadership is what's required (but in a much broader sense of 'situational' than is traditionally understood).
That can and should be influenced by and cognisant of culture; contemporary micro and macro environment (PESTLE); targets; past and future; a healthy dose of EI and so on.
In that regard, I'd completely concur with Vincent's proposition that leaders don't necessarily need to have a similar style - just a style that suits and works.
