Careers advice needed regarding salary

Hi all.  If you are in a job you relatively enjoy but you see other jobs advertised in a similar role to you but for more money, how do you recommend someone responds to such a situation?  I don't really want to move but would like to be valued appropriately.

Thanks for your help.

Matt,

The key part of your question is the final sentence. It sounds to me like you think you're undervalued, rather than you want more money per se (yes, we'd all like more money, but I think you can see what I'm saying here). The two things are quite different and would require different approaches. You also have to take into account job satisfaction and development opportunities. You said that you "relatively enjoy" what you do - if this is the case, the positive effect of more money is likely to be only temporary, and you'll be back in the same boat sooner or later.

Assuming that you want to stay where you are, you need to gather some evidence of being underpaid compared with other people in a similar role inside and outside the organisation. You may well come up against corporate pay policy here, and that's a tough one to get round. You could also discuss the possibility of having your post upgraded, perhaps by showing willingness to take on some additional responsibility, or by actively seeking to get involved in high-profile projects.

When it comes down to it, though, I would exercise caution before jumping ship. Over the years I've seen an awful lot of people who thought the grass was greener somewhere else, only to discover that the place they left was actually better place to work than where they ended up..

Hi Jim, thanks for getting back to me.  You're probably right about being valued not just being a financial consideration, but I have done a quick scan of the market and it does appear a financial reality.  I think I've done a good job here but there isn't a real appreciation of this, in either sense of the word.
