If you could teach one thing to a young leader, what would it be?

It's important to give young managers the right habits to take forward in their career.

If you could teach one thing to a young leader, what would it be?

Key skills for young leaders are integrity, communication and a real belief in your own ability.

Matthew Clayton

Ambassador CMI & IBC

Never be afraid to try something new or do things differently. In the words of Matthew Arnold, "The free thinking of one age is the common sense of the next."

Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions.

"You have two ears and one mouth - use them in that proportion!"

You are only as good as your staff, respect them, encourage them, trust them develop them, challenge them, support them and then marvel at the results they deliver with you.

If I could teach one thing to a future manager it's to be humble.

The saying "Good today better than Perfect tomorrow" has helped me alot. Young leaders are managers, planners, decision makers. They should not keep static.

Stick to your values even when the going gets tough.

Mathew, so right and in the order I like

Jim, agree  trying something new is always a challange I enjoy

Laure, agree

John, agree but sometimes I got them in the wrong order. Painfull learning.

Sian,  I can relate very much to this and wish I wrote it.  Will remember it though for future use .

Wayne, being humble is also important

Margaret, good today and every day works toward perfection

John, agree, values are important and say something about an individual

bottom line is they are all good and reading them like this reminds me of their importance

It is a sign of strength and not a sign of weakness to listen to your team members

Pause, Think and Listen

Respect your colleagues and don't be afraid to ask.

I can't keep it to one so...."Trust your intuition", "Integrity at ALL times", "Never burn bridges"

Absolutely agree with all the comments, good sound principles to give any young leader.  My five pence worth is:  Managing and leading is not a perfect science, it is a continually evolving profession with no two people or situations the same.  You have to adapt your style continuously without compromising the essence of who you are.  You can either take the lift straight to the top floor and learn nothing (or very little) about leadership and managment along the way or you can take the stairs and make sure that you are making room for those following behind you.  Be consistently observant however time consuming. It is will stand you in good stead as you face both opportunities and challenges.  Remember a leader / manager is only as good as the individuals they surround themselves with.  Ciao

1. Follow the 80/20 rule - focus on getting it 80% OK as the remaining 20% is not always worth the effort it takes.

2. Believe in yourself and focus on why you are great, not on your flaws.

3. Network!!!

4. Find exceptional leaders and model them.

5. Be inclusive and build great relationships with your people and invest in them - you are only as good as they are.

6. Invest in yourself - go for courses, get a coach, constantly learn & grow and self-improve.

I would teach to learn and then pass on their experience and knowledge to next generation.

My advice to any young manager would be: do not be afraid of appointing older, wiser or more experienced people to your team. If you already have them, then use them, involve them and above all listen to them. They will respect you for it and you will benefit so much more than you will probably realise until much later in your career.

While it is good to have a vision of where you want to go personnally, conentrate on doing the current job well and the next promotion will come.

The ability to inspire others.
