What was your first job?

Just thought it would be interesting to hear the first job some of the people here have had, and indeed how their career progressed to where you are now.

I always got the impression when I was starting out from people in careers departments that progress would be nice and linear but it often hasn't been like that at all.

So, what was your first job and where are you now?

I did stuff like pulling pints in a local pub and stacking shelves in Sainsburys.

Actually, no... I didn't progress to such lofty heights.  I was the one in dragged stuff out to various aisles for the shelf stackers, and dragged away their empties.

Onwards and upwards... ! :)

My first job was as a life guard at a local holiday camp.  I suppose as jobs go it wasn't a bad one, but lets just say it wasn't as glamorous as Baywatch.

My first job was in a boarding cattery, feeding, grooming and cleaning out the cats and when I began this at the age of 13 I thought the princely sum of £1 per hour was fantastic!

My first "proper" job on leaving school was actually a combination of 3 jobs - early morning office cleaning, then chamber-maiding through the day and back out to do late evening office cleaning. It was the only way my parents would agree to me quitting in the middle of my A-levels. I think it was this willingness to get on and do "the dirty jobs" to bring the money in that stood me in good stead for future job applications.

I am now (16 years after leaving school), the Operations Manager of an IT Service Desk and have spent the past 12 years in a variety of leadership/management roles. My working life definately has not followed a linear path and I think this has allowed me to gain a breadth of skills and experience that I would not have been able to, without including sideways moves or industry changes.
