Worker satisfaction is based upon perceptions of senior management

One of the key findings the 2010 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government survey is that worker satisfaction is more profoundly affected by perceptions of top management than by their immediate supervisor.

What lessons can top leaders in the public and private sector glean from this?

It's interesting you say that Matt, because I think in most of the companies I've worked at the relationship with the immediate boss has generally been pretty good as you deal with them on a daily basis and it's more a case of working together at the grindstone.  Yet all of that work can be undone by poor strategy from the boardroom, so it is a really important point to make, and I think it's made much worse by the fact that so few senior managers are visible within their companies.

Management by walking around isn't a new concept by any means but I don't think many senior leaders practice it.
