What surprised you when you started up?

For those that have been through the start-up process, what surprised you the most about it?

Were you surprised by your co-founder or how much time your start-up took of your life?

Not meaning to sound arrogant, but what surprised me was just how easy it is to get a business off the ground.  To be fair, my business was a pretty small enterprise and so not a 'start up' in the sense that you often hear about, that required high levels of investment.  I just operated within my means and things slowly grew over time.

Probably moving from the public sector   -  where salary had been a regular and reliable occurrence   and where I could close my eyes and  largely ignore the taxman knowing all the PAYE  etc .  would be taken care of.    Then suddenly  I was in a big world as Director of my own company.       Knowing I wanted to be ethical   but realising I had a steep learning curve in running an effective business.  ( but thankfully there was a lot of help out there).

Also  was surprised at first  how doing things I had done for years, for someone else,  suddenly became a challenge to my confidence when doing it for myself.....thankfully  that quickly wore off.     But at first the world seems big and a bit scary...but thankfully fun as well !
