Update from West Midlands Board

31 January 2018

Well another year is finally coming to an end and what a fantastic year we have had as the second largest region in the country! Some of the greatest highlights (not to be forgotten) of 2017 include, the prestigious Midlands Conference where the theme was focused around “Managing in Uncertain Times” and we were all very well entertained by the “Rhino” man David Hyner amongst other great speakers. 2017 will also be remembered for the introduction of the new Apprenticeship Levy, encouraging all business leaders to invest in developing the skills and abilities of their work force. CMI played a significant role in leading a large number of the trailblazer groups in helping to develop and shape the new government approved apprenticeship standards. This in turn led to the launch of the first Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship and the Senior Leader Master’s Degree Apprenticeship standards. We held a fantastic event in collaboration with the Federation of Small Businesses focused around coaching and mentoring in the work place. Then of course we celebrated the annual MacLaren Lecture in partnership with Aston University, where Carolyn Fairbairn, CBI Director General demonstrated how regional growth could be unlocked, spreading prosperity to the whole of the UK. Similarly we were delighted to celebrate the 24th annual Crystal Lecture in partnership with Wolverhampton University where Val Wright, Innovation Expert showed us how to make a positive difference by being thoughtfully ruthless…. and the list goes on………..

I do hope that 2017 has been all that you have wanted it to be and you are a little closer to being the leader or manager that you aspire to be. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued membership and support. I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and an absolutely fantastic 2018
