Chartered Manager - MOD
The Chartered Manager award will be of great benefit to me when I seek employment outside the Army and it will help enormously in positioning me at an appropriate senior level.
Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Martin FCMI CMgr
Armed Forces - Defence Medical Service
Role & business priorities
Jonathan headed up the performance management team within the Defence Medical Services Department (DMS), based in the Ministry of Defence
Head Office in Whitehall. The organisation is responsible for approximately 7,500 people many of whom have clinical skills ranging from senior consultants to paramedics, and general healthcare managers. He was responsible for driving efficiency within the organisation by setting performance objectives, indicators and targets, and for implementing and running the risk based approach to performance management.
Business impact delivered
By re-defining, negotiating and developing the organisation’ s strategic plan and aligning it with the key outputs of the organisation, Jonathan made a significant impact. With a budget of £250m the plan matches resources to outputs and is directly accountable to Parliament. As a result of his work, Jonathan reduced duplication of reporting by 20% thereby reducing staff effort and freeing up resources for other tasks. He also increased the SMART measurement of objectives from 82% to 100% which improved staff morale and motivation.
The appeal of Chartered Manager
Jonathan wanted to effectively demonstrate the management skills that he developed throughout his time in the Army: “I felt at, having served in the Armed Services for 23years...I had gained considerable leadership and management experience, often from unique and demanding environments. I was keen to translate this management experience and skill into something that had wide recognition within civilian management.”
When still in the Army, Jonathan said: “The Chartered Manager award will be of great benefit to me when I seek employment outside the Army and it will help enormously in positioning me at an appropriate senior level. I hope that achieving the highly respected Chartered Manager award will demonstrate to prospective employers that I am an effective and influential manager who is able to make an impact and change things for the better.”
