Dr Matthew Jelavic FCMI
Dr Matthew Jelavic is Chair of the Board, National President and CEO of the Canadian Institute of Management, Public Representative Board Director with the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations and Board Director with the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers. He also serves internationally on the Membership and Professional Development Board of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and various committees and working groups in management and engineering in Canada and internationally. He is a Professor within the School of Science and Engineering Technology at Durham College and Adjunct Associate Professor within the Faculty of Business and Information Technology at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Canada.
As an internationally recognized management expert and consultant, he is an expert in the field of corporate leadership and board governance with decades of experience that encompasses management and technology within the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors, both private and public.
Having received his Doctorate in Business Administration from the Grenoble École de Management and Master's Degree in Management Sciences from the University of Waterloo, his research and practice areas focus on knowledge, technology, engineering and innovation management. He also has a firm grounding in organisational theory and cultural analysis as it pertains to international business and strategic management. He has published extensively in academic peer-reviewed and practitioner journals and books, and participates extensively in management and engineering conferences and professional development.
Prior to his entry into academia, Matthew worked in the water treatment, tunnel boring, plastics extrusion, automotive manufacturing and energy management consulting industries in various engineering and management capacities. Initially starting as a field engineer, he progressed through project and department management at several companies, eventually managing an automotive manufacturing plant serving a regional market. All of this experience has combined quite well to give Matthew an exceptional background into complex management systems.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, a Chartered Engineer (UK), and a Licensed Professional Engineer (Province of Ontario, Canada).
