Good management is the difference between winning and losing. The talent might be there, but as a manager how can I motivate and lead effectively?
Good management and leadership is necessary at all levels, from board members to front line staff. If done well, management is the glue that holds an organisation together and ensures its competitive success. Where management is at its worst, staff welfare is sacrificed in favour of meeting higher targets, quality of service is compromised to reduce costs and training and development opportunities are no longer considered important. All too frequently, the actions of a minority result in devaluing the entire management profession and it is all too easy to blame management for organisational failures. Now more than ever, organisations need to invest in developing the skills and competencies of their workforce, narrowing the potential skills gap and helping to redefine the aspirations of managers to manage well.
Managers are easy targets when times are tough – they are after all the face of an organisation and can make easy targets. However they are the ones with responsibility of steadying the ship in uncomfortable times. Sometimes this means making unpopular decisions, and although easy to criticise, there is likely to be a clear rationale behind any decision taken. It is no easy task, but employers must make sure that those entrusted with management have the skills and ability to perform.
