Bovis Homes’ chairman appointed as president of the Chartered Management Institute

13 November 2006 – Tim Melville-Ross CBE, chairman of Bovis Homes plc, has been appointed as the new President of the Chartered Management Institute – the UK’s only chartered professional body providing support for managers and leaders across the UK.

Melville-Ross will use his role to call on employers to give genuine commitment to the development of the UK’s managers and leaders.  His tenure will focus on the Institute’s goal of addressing the current management skills shortage and challenging low levels of organisational investment in management and leadership development.

Working alongside Mary Chapman, chief executive of the Institute, Melville-Ross will drive forward debate on the key issues affecting the performance of UK organisations.  This will include calling for:

-         the uptake of the ‘Chartered Manager’ programme, a nationally recognised benchmark highlighting the impact that professionally qualified managers can have at work

-         at least 50 per cent of managers to have professional management qualifications by 2020 as part of the Institute’s support of the Leitch Review of Skills

-         the adoption of robust and predictive workforce measures, enabling stakeholders and investors to assess an organisation’s ‘future performance’

On becoming President of the Institute, Tim Melville-Ross said, “My personal convictions about the value and importance of strong management and leadership mean that I am delighted to have the honour of serving as the Institute’s next President.  The challenge of addressing the UK’s low productivity is not easy, but unless we grapple with it, our ability to compete in an increasingly dynamic world will be compromised.”

Melville-Ross has had a distinguished career, beginning with 10 years service at British Petroleum.  He worked for Nationwide Building Society for 20 years, for the last 10 of which he was chief executive.  His current roles include the chairmanship of DTZ Holdings plc, Manganese Bronze plc, Royal London Insurance and the Council of Essex University.  Tim has also served as Director General of the Institute of Directors.

In assuming the role, Melville-Ross becomes the Institute’s 31st President.  He succeeds Sir David Varney, senior adviser on transformational government to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
