BT leads way in hiring of ex-service personnel

BT is offering former military personnel the opportunity to boost their career development and learn new skills by taking on roles as broadband engineers.

The telecoms firm is stepping up its recruitment drive for former servicemen and women in order to accelerate the delivery of its fibre broadband network.

It is aiming to boost the career development of 520 new engineers, with the majority coming from an armed forces background.

Openreach, BT’s local network business, has already hired 200 ex-servicemen and women this year, and the company has praised the new recruits for being "highly skilled, motivated and disciplined".

A BT spokesperson told People Management: "We're really pleased to be recruiting so many ex-armed services personnel."

He explained that former military personnel have the experience of complex engineering tasks in very challenging environments.

The government recently set a target of 2015 to give the UK one of the best broadband networks in Europe, which will see BT playing a major part in the rollout of super-fast broadband.
