Businesses struggling to prevent use of personal devices at work

The growth of laptops, smartphones and tablet computers has led to many employees taking their personal devices to work, according to Blue Coat Systems.

Nigel Hawthorn, vice president of marketing EMEA at the firm, explained that as the devices are used for both personal and work purposes they are already being brought into the workplace.

"The idea of trying to stipulate exactly what devices people use is impossible now."

He also explained that the growth of people bringing their own technology to work is set to continue as the prices of such gadgets decrease.

The smartphone and tablet market has now reached the point where people are used to using the devices at home so expect to be able to do the same at work.

A recent Damovo UK poll of IT directors found that 68 per cent of IT directors believe the increased use of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, has increased the amount they spent worrying about the security of their organisation's ICT.

A difficult situation certainly.

My  wife's company has a strict ICT security  policy which means that employees may  only connect to the company network using company-supplied equipment, and anyone found breaching this could be facing disciplinary action. This includes not using flash memory media to transport files home to work on, although files can be downloaded to company laptops and taken home that way.

Policing it is, of course, much more difficult, especially with the growth in telecommuting and remote / home workers.

At the end of the day it's down to the integrity of the individual to abide by the corporate rules.
