Businesses urged to understand health and safety risks

Businesses in the UK have been encouraged to understand the health and safety risks associated with their organisation.

One industry expert has urged the government to play a bigger role in helping firms learn about the safety risks employees could be exposed to in the workplace.

Michael Slade, managing director at Bibby Consulting and Support, said that while the government is trying to implement legislation, it is generally because something has happened in the past which it wants to avoid in the future.

"I think [it's better] for the business person to actually understand their process, understand what they are doing, see clearly what the risks are and do what they can to sensibly mitigate the risks," he explained.

It was recently revealed that those just starting off on their career development path with a company are the most at risk from health and safety issues in the workplace, as they are unaware of the risks they are exposed to at work.
