With such a competitive job market in today's climate, one expert has claimed that now is the time to boost skills on a career break.
Rachel Morgan-Trimmer, founder of thecareerbreaksite.com, said that those struggling to find a career development opportunity can be reinvigorated by some time away.
Time spent away from the working world can also allow employees to improve their skills.
"It's a good time for employers to give sabbaticals too. Because these are unpaid, it means companies can save on salaries while ensuring they retain good, loyal and skilled staff."
She added that any time away "doing something constructive" will be of benefit when people return to work.
"Most career breakers in fact do a combination of things - this ensures you get a wide range of experience, and it's enjoyable too," Ms Morgan Trimmer noted.
A recent PwC survey found that graduates leaving university are looking to their employers to provide training opportunities to boost skills.
