Career development: UK labour market suffers contractions

The UK is due to experience contractions in its labour markets that will affect different regions in varied ways, which could impact career development programmes.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and KPMG's Labour Market Outlook has found that there is a fall in outlook among private sector employers including those in the manufacturing industry.

It found that both short and long-term staffing level intentions have fallen, with growth in the private sector occurring unevenly across the widening north-south divide.

Gerwyn Davies, public policy adviser at the CIPD, has warned that the country could be facing an employment relapse with serious effects on career development.

He said: "Increasing uncertainty about growth prospects in both the UK and global economies is now affecting hiring intentions; particularly in those industries such as manufacturing that stand to lose most in the event of a global slowdown."

Paul Byrne, head of the insurance practice at McGregor Boyall, recently highlighted the high level of demand for business change and management skills, with transformation work being a key driver of the trend.
