Career development news: More women needed in the IT industry

Women looking to gain management qualifications and aid their career development could do well to consider working in the IT industry after it was revealed only 20 per cent of the UK IT workforce are female.

A recent survey conducted by 360 IT found three-quarters of the organisations questioned do not do enough to pull women into the industry.

Jerri Barrett, vice president of marketing at the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (ABI) said there were several reasons why there were not many women in the IT industry.

She pointed out that in America, only five per cent of the top IT posts are filled by women.

ABI's study 'Climbing the Technical Ladder' highlighted women face various challenges in securing mid-level IT jobs, including bias and stereotyping as well as the work/family conflict in creating a work life balance.

However Ms Barrett added: "Companies are paying more and more attention to their corporate cultures and are making significant efforts on retaining their female employees."

A report by Friends Provident and the Future Foundation found 37 per cent of Britons believe women should be willing to cut back on paid work for the sake of their family.

Why does the IT industry need more women though?  I'm not saying that it doesn't but it would help if there was some practical benefit to hiring a woman over a man.
