EON is the latest energy supplier to invest money in the Carbon Trust's Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) initiative.
In total, the project has received £9.2 million with EON's funding, coupled with money from DONG Energy; RWE Innogy; ScottishPower Renewables; SSE Renewables and Statoil.
Recently, Mainstream Renewable Power and Statkraft also joined the initiative.
Collectively, partners in the OWA project represent 61 per cent of the licensed offshore wind capacity in UK waters.
Michael Lewis, European managing director of EON's renewable business, said: "EON has installed 64 per cent of all offshore capacity in Europe so far this year, and we have another 4000MW of offshore wind in our project pipeline, so reducing the cost is of vital importance to us. The OWA will help focus the industry's efforts to tackle the big issues in a coordinated way and the results will benefit us all."
The Carbon Trust launched the OWA to help the UK meet the European Union enforced 15 per cent renewable target.
