Grandparents 'help parents return to work'

Grandparents are playing a key role in helping parents return to work, as they often look after children for free, according to new research.

Almost half of the 2,000 working parents surveyed are reliant on their mothers or fathers for childcare so they can work, according to the survey carried out by Workingmums.co.uk.

Two out of five opted for childminders, friends or other family members to look after children, while only four per cent employed a nanny or au pair to help out.

Some 40 per cent of mothers said the cost of childcare was preventing them from returning to work, with one in ten of those polled being forced to pay more than £750 a month.

Gillian Nissim, founder of Workingmums.co.uk, said: "The survey shows just how important grandparents are in helping parents get back into the workplace. Working mums are able to contribute significantly to the British economy as a result of their parents looking after their children."

Recently, a survey by Aviva revealed the average cost for full-time childcare for two children is now as high as £17,000 a year.
