Management training should highlight alternatives to the traditional meeting, which is commonly perceived as being a waste of time, an expert has claimed.
Al Pittampalli, author of Read This Before Our Next Meeting, says that there are deep and underlying reasons why many employees are frustrated with meetings.
He said: "Meetings get in the way of your project getting fulfilled. Meetings get in the way of the approval you need to take some type of action inside of your organisation and do something that matters."
Mr Pittampalli has warned that the traditional meeting, which is intended to help coordinate people's actions, often fail to achieve this.
He added that unnecessary meetings can actually obstruct a project's momentum and become actively harmful to it.
His comments were made at online webinar Wipe Out Mediocre Meetings & Become the Office Hero.
Earlier this month, head of insurance practice at McGregor Boyall Paul Byrne emphasised the benefits that management skills provide to businesses and the fact that these are in high demand.

Meetings should have an agenda which covers key questions and risks for a project. Timescales should be set and adhered to and whilst everyone should be encouraged to have their say the meeting chair should ensure people don’t waffle or big their part up. Meetings should also begin and end at the time stated on the agenda.
Meetings can also be held standing, meet in the boardroom for a specifc time, set time limits per subject and feedback, get back to work.
