Sellafield managers outstanding management and leadership skills honoured
16 October 2009 - David Dunn, Business Improvement Manager for Sellafield Ltd’s Central Improvement Team has been awarded the accolade of CMI’s National Chartered Manager of the Year. The award recognises David’s exceptional leadership and management credentials and was presented to him last night (15th October) by CMI’s chief executive, Ruth Spellman OBE at the CMI Gold Medal dinner in London.
The national award follows David’s success earlier this year, when he was named ‘North West Regional Chartered Manager of the Year’. Chartered Manager is a standard of best practice and mark of quality assurance for professional managers across the UK. To achieve both awards, David had to demonstrate how he has made a significant and real difference to Sellafield Ltd.
Achieving Chartered Manager status required David to undergo vigorous assessment. This included the submission of a portfolio of work that demonstrated the business impact he made, as well as his high level management and leadership skills. Success is measured against six nationally recognised skill areas, including the ability to manage change, lead people and meet customer needs.
David based his submission on his work in delivering an important project to replace the site-wide training infrastructure with a centralised employee service centre. Other significant achievements featured in his submission are the consolidation of training resources, which reduced costs and increased work output and efficiency, reducing admin waste.
Being awarded Chartered Manager status provides independent endorsement of David’s effectiveness and ability to successfully manage his business impact as well as the challenges of today’s working environment within Sellafield Ltd.
Ruth Spellman, chief executive of CMI says, “The standard of submissions for the Chartered Manager of the Year awards this year was exceptionally high. Thirteen outstanding Chartered Managers were recognised with a regional award. David Dunn was one of two winners in the North West. We are delighted to award him the overall title in recognition of the clear demonstration he gave of the core Chartered Manager skills of leading people and managing change. In doing so he achieved full stakeholder engagement for a project at Sellafield designed to replace the site-wide training infrastructure with a centralised employee service centre. David also impressed us with the way in which he utilised his Chartered Manager skills as part of his day to day work activities to support customers as well as his team and colleagues.”
David Dunn, National Chartered Manager of the Year says, “I am honoured and delighted to win such a coveted award and I would like to thank the judging panel and CMI for recognising my work at Sellafield. I would also like to applaud the excellent work done by the regional winners in delivering huge benefits to businesses up and down the country.
“I believe going through the Chartered Manager Process has helped me to become more focused and significantly improved my own performance.
I also view gaining Chartered status as a fundamental part of my ongoing management development, which can only help to maximise my contribution to the business”.
Since being nominated, David’s role has changed; he now has increased management responsibilities for a larger team.
