The countries small to medium-sized enterprises need to more effectively promote themselves if they are to see a rise in business and turnover, it has been claimed.
Stefan Drew, a marketing expert, said this has been the case for many years with some businesses and not necessarily a consequence of the economic downturn.
"It has always been like that but to be fair, it is not just now with the recession we’ve had worldwide, we have always had a problem. Starting a business has never been easy and marketing has never been easy," he added.
The reason a lot of businesses fail is not because they are incapable of doing their job; if nobody has ever heard of them and they have never marketed themselves, they are not going to make a living out of it and they will "go bust anyway", Mr Drew stated.
He noted that being on the market and managing a business is just as important as being technically capable as a plumber or another trade.
"They have to understand that and many don't know where to start," the expert added.
