The pressure on employees caused by fears over job security, rising workloads and increasing living costs is leading to more stress and anxiety, which can result in depression and mental health issues.
Karen Jackson, solicitor and managing partner at didlaw, explained that depression can have a huge impact on employees and therefore the business itself if not monitored correctly.
She noted that the key symptoms of sleep problems, such as the inability to concentrate, poor memory and a short temper, can affect business productivity.
"In terms of more desk-based jobs, it is a question of something that might [usually] take you ten minutes, might take you an hour," Ms Jackson noted.
The problems not only affect the worker suffering, but they can also have an impact on colleagues around them.
A recent Kenexa survey of 60,000 workers around the world revealed that 35% of UK employees are now experiencing an unreasonable level of stress at work.
