Wind power 'will increase energy employment'

Growth in the uptake of wind energy will bring "comprehensive" benefits to the UK, it has been suggested.

According to Nick Medic, head of communications at RenewableUK, wind power will not only lead to cleaner electricity, but it will also provide energy security and boost employment opportunities in utilities.

Recent statistics from the European Wind Energy Association have revealed that offshore wind energy production is heading for a record year in 2010.

In the first half of this year, 118 new offshore wind turbines were fully connected to the electricity grid.

These turbines have a capacity of 333MW, which is well over half of the 577MW installed in the whole of 2009.

Mr Medic said the growth would have wide-ranging advantages.

"On the back of this ambitious roll-out of renewables, we're looking to have jobs created by 2020, and also business opportunities and indirect jobs for local communities," he added.

I don't think it will bring comprehensive benefits to the only people that really matter - the customer.  You get big blots on the landscape, providing irregular and expensive energy.  I'm all for renewable energy but wind really isn't the answer.

Yes, I'm not sure re: wind either.  We've got to find some alternatives but they need to be cost effective too.
